Video size limits by platform

The biggest video each chat app, mail service and school site takes, and the size we compress to so yours goes through.

Upload limits at a glance

Each platform’s page compresses to the size in this table, which comes from the same data. Pick a platform to compress for it.

Official: the platform’s own help page states the limit. Third-party: guides, search summaries or school settings report it, so treat it as likely rather than certain.

How to read these limits

Chat apps and mail services set one limit for everyone, sometimes a higher one on a paid plan. We compress a little under it, so a file that fits on our side also fits on theirs.

Course sites are different: Canvas, Blackboard and Moodle let each school set its own limit. The numbers here are defaults or common settings, so if your upload is rejected, the number in the error message is the one to use. Type it into Target size on the platform’s page.

Google Classroom has no size limit of its own: work is stored in Google Drive, which takes files far bigger than any phone video. The sizes in its rows are ones we suggest for a quick upload, not limits.

Size limit questions

Why do you compress to less than the limit?

Platforms count every byte, and a file that is even slightly over is rejected. For chat apps we aim at about 95% of the limit, so the video goes through the first time.

Is a megabyte 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?

Platforms differ: some count decimal megabytes (1,000,000 bytes), others binary ones (1,048,576 bytes, also written MiB). Our sizes are decimal MB and sit under the limit in either unit, so you don’t need to know which one a platform uses.

Why is the email size so much lower than the attachment limit?

Email sends attachments as text (Base64), which makes them about 37% bigger on the way. So Gmail’s 25 MB limit fits a video of about 18 MB, and Outlook’s 20 MB fits about 14 MB.

Does Google Classroom have a video size limit?

Not of its own. Classroom stores work in Google Drive, which takes files far bigger than any phone video. A big file still uploads slowly on a weak connection, so we suggest under 100 MB for a quick upload, or under 250 MB for a sharper picture.

How current are these limits?

Each row shows the month we last checked it. Platforms change their limits, sometimes without notice. If a video compressed for a limit here is still rejected, write to us and we’ll check again.
