Compress video for Common App and SlideRoom

SlideRoom, where many colleges collect Common App arts supplements, takes videos up to 250 MB. We compress yours to 240 MB so it uploads the first time.

  • Compressed on your device when possible
  • H.264 or H.265 MP4
  • Server fallback, deleted after 2 hours

Sending an arts supplement video

The Common App form itself has no place for a video. Colleges that want one, such as an audition, a reel or a performance, ask for it through SlideRoom or through their own portal. SlideRoom takes each video up to 250 MB and sets no length limit, but colleges often do: some film programs ask for about ten minutes at most, so read each college’s instructions first.

Drop the video in and we compress it to 240 MB, just under the limit, so it doesn’t fail at the end of a long upload. Reviewers judge a portfolio by how it looks, so when 240 MB isn’t enough for the full resolution, we lower the resolution instead of letting the picture turn blocky. Compare it with the original before you download.

Application deadlines don’t wait for slow software. There’s nothing to install, and when your browser can handle the video, it’s compressed on your own device without being uploaded to us. You get an H.264 MP4, a format SlideRoom accepts and reviewers can play in any browser.

Limits last checked .

What is SlideRoom’s video size limit?

250 MB per video, according to SlideRoom’s help center. SlideRoom doesn’t limit the length, but each college can, so check its instructions too.

What if my college uses a different portal?

Some colleges collect videos on their own site or another service, with its own limit. Find the number in their instructions or in the upload error, and type it into the Target size box instead.

Will a ten-minute film fit in 240 MB?

Yes. Up to about nine minutes keep full HD (1080p); a ten-minute film comes out at 720p, which still looks sharp on a laptop screen. Twenty minutes fit at 720p too.

Will compressing hurt my portfolio?

Only as much as the size requires. If your video is already under 250 MB, upload it as it is. Otherwise compare the result with the original before you download, and look at fast motion and fine detail, which soften first.
