Compress a Zoom recording
Meeting recording too big to share? Drop the MP4 from your Zoom folder and save a much smaller copy that still shows every slide clearly.
How big a Zoom recording gets
Zoom’s own estimate is about 200 MB for each hour of a recorded meeting, and about 20 MB an hour when only a shared screen is recorded. Those are averages: recordings with several cameras on, lots of movement or a higher resolution are often much bigger. Local recordings are MP4 files, saved by default in the Zoom folder inside your Documents folder.
Most of a meeting hardly changes: faces that barely move, a slide that stays up for a minute, a document being scrolled. That’s exactly what compresses best, so a Zoom recording can usually get a lot smaller before anyone notices, and slides and shared screens keep their text sharp as long as the picture stays at 720p or above.
A Zoom recording is an ordinary H.264 MP4, which most computer browsers can compress themselves, and then its length doesn’t matter: a two-hour lecture is fine as long as your computer has free space for the result. When your browser can’t do it, the recording goes to our server, which takes videos up to 1 GB and 60 minutes. A longer meeting has to be cut into parts first, with our video cutter.
Why compress Zoom recordings here
Slides stay readable
The resolution is lowered only when the file would otherwise look blocky, so slide text and shared documents stay sharp.
Long meetings in your browser
When your browser does the work, an hour or two of meeting is no problem. Only our server stops at 60 minutes.
Cut the waiting room first
Use our video cutter to drop the minutes before everyone joined and after the meeting ended, then compress what’s left.
Easy to pass around
A smaller file uploads faster to Google Drive, OneDrive or a course page, and colleagues don’t wait on a huge download.
How to compress a Zoom recording
- 01
Open your Zoom folder
Local recordings are in Documents › Zoom. For a cloud recording, download the MP4 first.
- 02
Drop the MP4 on the page
Balanced is selected for you. Choose Strong for a smaller file, or type a size in MB.
- 03
Save the smaller copy
Compare a slide in both versions, then download the MP4. The original stays where it was.
Questions

Why is my Zoom recording so big?
Zoom records the meeting at a bitrate meant to look good in any situation, and real recordings often come out well above its estimate of about 200 MB an hour. Most of that data describes detail nobody needs to watch the meeting again.
Is there a limit on how long the recording can be?
Not when your browser compresses it: then there’s no limit on length or file size, only on your computer’s free space. When the recording has to go to our server, it can be up to 1 GB and 60 minutes long, so a meeting longer than that needs cutting into parts first with our video cutter. The page tells you which one it will use as soon as you add the file.
How small can a one-hour meeting get?
That depends on how much moves. Start with Balanced, which halves it, and try Strong if that isn’t enough. If it has to fit a particular limit, type the size under Target size: the result comes out just under it, and the resolution is lowered only as far as it has to be.
Can I email a Zoom recording?
Usually only part of it. Gmail stops at 25 MB, and our email page aims for 18 MB to leave room for how attachments are sent, which holds about 1:30 of video at 720p. Cut out the part you need with our video cutter first. For the whole meeting, upload it to cloud storage and send the link.
Will shared screens and slides still be clear?
Yes, at 720p and above. Small text in slides, spreadsheets and code blurs below 720p, so if Strong or Maximum lowers the resolution that far, go back to Balanced, or set Resolution to 720p in Advanced and accept a slightly bigger file.
Is the meeting uploaded anywhere?
Only if your browser can’t compress it. Then it goes to our server over an encrypted connection, is visible only to you, and is deleted 2 hours later. Meetings often include private conversations, so the page shows before you start whether the recording will stay on your computer.
Is the sound kept?
Yes. The audio is kept as AAC in the MP4, so voices stay clear; compressing mainly shrinks the picture, which is where almost all of the size is.
Can I compress a Zoom cloud recording?
Yes, once it’s on your computer. Download the MP4 from your Zoom recordings, then drop it here like a local one.
