Compress video for Moodle

Moodle’s upload limit is set by your school and course, often 100 MB or 250 MB. We compress your video to just under it, or to the number Moodle shows.

  • Compressed on your device when possible
  • H.264 or H.265 MP4
  • Server fallback, deleted after 2 hours

Uploading video to Moodle

Moodle has no single limit. The web server, PHP, the site administrator and each course or activity set one, and every level can only go lower than the one above it. That’s why one assignment takes 250 MB and the next stops at 100 MB. Many universities use one of those two; a server left at PHP’s defaults allows only 2 MB.

Look next to the upload box: Moodle shows the maximum size for new files there. Pick 100 MB or 250 MB above, and we compress to 95 MB or 240 MB. For any other number, type it into the Target size box and we aim a little under it.

There’s nothing to install, which matters on a shared or school computer. When your browser can handle the video, it’s compressed right on your device without being uploaded to us. You get an H.264 MP4, which Moodle’s media player plays in any browser.

What is Moodle’s maximum upload size?

It depends on the site, the course and the activity. Many universities use 100 MB or 250 MB, and a server left at PHP’s defaults stops at 2 MB. The number shown next to the upload box is the one that applies to you.

Why is the limit different in each course?

Teachers can set a lower limit for their course or for a single assignment, up to the maximum the site allows. So one upload box can say 250 MB while another says 100 MB.

How long a video fits in 95 MB?

About three and a half minutes in full HD (1080p), or nearly eight at 720p. 240 MB holds about nine minutes in full HD. Longer videos are compressed at a lower resolution, so a whole recorded talk still fits.

Can I ask for a bigger limit instead?

Your teacher can raise the course’s limit up to what the site allows, and only the site administrator can go beyond that. Before a deadline, compressing the video is usually quicker than waiting for a reply.
