Where these facts come from

How they differ

HandBrake is a free, open-source desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux. It compresses on your computer, with detailed encoding settings, and sets the size by average bitrate rather than a target in MB.

8mb.video is a website that compresses to a size you pick, up to 200 MB, on its servers. It takes files up to 2 GB, and free videos are capped in length, more tightly for smaller targets.

Clideo, FreeConvert and VEED are online tools that upload your video and compress it on their servers, with presets, a percentage of the original or a quality slider instead of an exact size. They take up to 500 MB, 1 GB and 1 GB per file for free.

Video Compressor compresses in your browser when it can, so the video doesn’t leave your device, and uses our servers only for videos the browser can’t handle, saying so before anything is uploaded. You type the size in MB and get an MP4.

Which video compressor doesn’t upload my video?

HandBrake runs on your computer, so nothing is uploaded. Video Compressor compresses in your browser when it can; formats the browser can’t read, such as AVI and WMV, and HDR videos go to our servers, and the page tells you before you start. 8mb.video, Clideo, FreeConvert and VEED upload every video.

Which ones let me type an exact size in MB?

Video Compressor and 8mb.video (up to 200 MB there). HandBrake sets the size by average bitrate, Clideo offers presets, FreeConvert a percentage of the original, and VEED a slider with a size estimate.

Which free video compressors add a watermark?

Clideo and VEED, on free exports, by their own help pages. HandBrake and Video Compressor don’t. The 8mb.video and FreeConvert pages don’t say either way, so the table shows a dash.

How big a video can I compress for free?

In your browser, Video Compressor has no fixed limit; on our servers it takes up to 1 GB and 60 minutes, 5 videos a day. HandBrake has no limit. 8mb.video takes up to 2 GB, FreeConvert 1 GB, VEED 1 GB and Clideo 500 MB.
