Getting a video under 8 MB
8 MB was Discord’s free upload limit for years, so it’s still the size many guides, community rules and chat bots ask for. Some forums and web forms stop at 8 MB too.
It’s a tight size: anything longer than a short clip comes out at a lower resolution, so cut the video down to the part that matters before you compress it. Discord itself now allows 20 MB on a free account, so for Discord our Discord page keeps more of the picture.
We aim a little under 8 MB so the file is sure to fit, since most sites reject anything even slightly over. Sizes are in decimal megabytes (1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes), so the result also fits a limit that counts megabytes the binary way. Your video is encoded once at the bitrate that lands on 8 MB; when it’s compressed in your browser, the result is measured and done again if it came out too big.
How long a video fits in 8 MB
The longest video that keeps each resolution, for a typical 30 fps video with sound. At 60 fps, expect about half as long.
| Resolution | Longest video |
|---|---|
| 1080p | |
| 720p | |
| 480p | |
| 360p |
Longer than 2:25? Even 360p would look too rough, so the page asks for a bigger size. Trim the video first or choose a bigger size.
Where you’ll run into 8 MB
Forums and message boards
Many forums still cap a single attachment at 8 MB. Upload the clip itself when the forum plays videos in the post, so readers don’t have to leave the thread. Otherwise a link to the full video works better.
Slide decks you’ll email
A video inserted into PowerPoint or Keynote travels inside the file. Shrink the clip to 8 MB first, and the deck can still go as an email attachment. It plays from the file itself, so the talk doesn’t need an internet connection.
Server rules and bots
Discord servers, bots and guides written for the old limit still ask for 8 MB. Follow the rule when there is one; for an ordinary Discord upload, the Discord page aims for 19 MB and keeps more detail.

Questions
Can’t find your answer? Write to feedback@videocompressor.xyz.
Will the video be exactly 8 MB?
Just under it. We aim a few percent below 8 MB so it’s certain to fit, since sites and apps reject a file that is even slightly over.
What if my video is already under 8 MB?
Then it already fits, and the page tells you so. You can send it as it is, or still make it smaller with a preset.
Will my video look worse at 8 MB?
That depends on its length. A short video keeps its full resolution; a longer one is scaled down, to 720p or lower, so the picture stays clean instead of blocky. The table above shows where each step starts. The sound keeps its quality unless the size is very small for the length.
What if my video is too long for 8 MB?
Past 2:25 there aren’t enough bits for a watchable picture, even at 360p, and the page asks for a bigger size. Trim the video with our video cutter first, or choose a bigger size.
Is Discord’s free limit still 8 MB?
No. It’s 20 MB on a free account now and 50 MB with Nitro Basic. An 8 MB file still goes through, but the Discord page aims for 19 MB and keeps a sharper picture.
Can I email an 8 MB video?
Yes. It fits in Gmail, Yahoo Mail and Outlook with room to spare, even after the encoding that makes attachments about a third bigger.
Can I put an 8 MB video in a PowerPoint?
Yes. The MP4 you download here is H.264 unless you choose H.265, and PowerPoint plays H.264 on Windows and Mac. Insert it like any other video; the deck grows by about the size of the clip. Keynote on a Mac plays the same file.
Should I choose H.264 or H.265 for 8 MB?
H.265 keeps more detail in the same 8 MB, so a longer video can keep a higher resolution. Choose it when the people you send it to have newer devices; H.264 plays everywhere.
Is my video uploaded to compress it?
Not when your browser can handle it: then it’s compressed on your device. Otherwise it goes to our server over an encrypted connection and is deleted 2 hours after compressing.
