Compress video for Google Classroom
Google Classroom has no file size limit, but a big video uploads slowly. We compress yours to just under 100 MB for a quick upload, or 250 MB for a sharper picture.
- Compressed on your device when possible
- H.264 or H.265 MP4
- Server fallback, deleted after 2 hours
Turning in video on Google Classroom
Classroom keeps your work in Google Drive, so it doesn’t limit a video’s size: Drive takes files far bigger than any phone recording. The trouble is getting it there. A few minutes of phone video can be more than a gigabyte, which takes a long time on school Wi-Fi, fills your Drive storage, and can leave your teacher looking at a video that’s still processing.
These two sizes are suggestions, not limits: 100 MB for a quick upload, 250 MB when the picture matters more. We aim a little under each. If your teacher or school gives you a number, type that into the Target size box instead.
You get an H.264 MP4, which Drive plays in the browser on any computer or Chromebook, including iPhone videos that were recorded in HEVC. When your browser can handle the video, it’s compressed right on your device without being uploaded to us, so it works on a school laptop where you can’t install anything.

Does Google Classroom have a file size limit?
Not one of its own. Your files go to Google Drive, which accepts files far bigger than any phone video; what runs out first is your Drive storage, which your school may set. A smaller file simply uploads and plays sooner.
Why does my video say it’s still processing?
Drive prepares every uploaded video for playback, and a long, high-resolution file takes longer. A smaller MP4 gives it less to do. If a video stays stuck for hours, upload the compressed copy instead.
Which size should I pick?
100 MB keeps about three and a half minutes in full HD (1080p) and nearly eight at 720p, enough for most presentations. 250 MB keeps about nine minutes in full HD; pick it for longer videos or when detail matters.
Can I turn in a compressed video from my phone?
Yes. Open this page in your phone’s browser, compress the video and save the MP4, then attach it to the assignment in the Classroom app.
