Getting a video under 20 MB

20 MB is Discord’s upload limit on a free account and Outlook’s attachment limit, so it’s one of the sizes people ask for most. Forms and course sites use it too.

For Discord, our Discord page compresses to 19 MB, a little under the limit, since Discord rejects a file even slightly over. For email, 20 MB is too much: attachments grow by about a third inside an email, so use our email page instead.

We aim a little under 20 MB so the file is sure to fit, since most sites reject anything even slightly over. Sizes are in decimal megabytes (1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes), so the result also fits a limit that counts megabytes the binary way. Your video is encoded once at the bitrate that lands on 20 MB; when it’s compressed in your browser, the result is measured and done again if it came out too big.

How long a video fits in 20 MB

The longest video that keeps each resolution, for a typical 30 fps video with sound. At 60 fps, expect about half as long.

Where you’ll run into 20 MB

  • Discord without Nitro

    Free accounts can upload 20 MB per file in servers and DMs, and Discord refuses anything over it. The Discord page aims for 19 MB to stay safely under, and also has the Nitro sizes if you pay for more.

  • Outlook attachments

    Outlook counts the email after encoding, so a 20 MB file is too big for its 20 MB limit. Compress to 14 MB on our email page, or share the file from OneDrive instead.

  • Course sites and forms

    Many learning platforms and online forms stop at 20 MB a file. That’s enough for a short class presentation at a lower resolution. If the course accepts links, a cloud drive keeps the original quality for a long one.

Will the video be exactly 20 MB?

Just under it. We aim a few percent below 20 MB so it’s certain to fit, since sites and apps reject a file that is even slightly over.

What if my video is already under 20 MB?

Then it already fits, and the page tells you so. You can send it as it is, or still make it smaller with a preset.

Will my video look worse at 20 MB?

That depends on its length. A short video keeps its full resolution; a longer one is scaled down, to 720p or lower, so the picture stays clean instead of blocky. The table above shows where each step starts. The sound keeps its quality unless the size is very small for the length.

What if my video is too long for 20 MB?

Past 6:10 there aren’t enough bits for a watchable picture, even at 360p, and the page asks for a bigger size. Trim the video with our video cutter first, or choose a bigger size.

Is 20 MB Discord’s free limit?

Yes, 20 MB per file without Nitro. A file just under 20 MB goes through; the Discord page aims for 19 MB to leave a margin, and also has the Nitro sizes.

Can I email a 20 MB video?

No. Outlook’s 20 MB limit and Gmail’s 25 MB count the encoded email, about 37% bigger than the file. The file has to be about 18 MB for Gmail, or less for Outlook; our email page is set to those sizes.

Does a 20 MB video fit on Messenger?

Yes. Messenger allows 25 MB per file, so it goes through with room to spare; our Messenger page aims for 24 MB. Messenger counts only the file, so unlike email there’s no encoding to allow for.

Should I choose H.264 or H.265 for 20 MB?

H.265 keeps more detail in the same 20 MB, so a longer video can keep a higher resolution. Choose it when the people you send it to have newer devices; H.264 plays everywhere.

Is my video uploaded to compress it?

Not when your browser can handle it: then it’s compressed on your device. Otherwise it goes to our server over an encrypted connection and is deleted 2 hours after compressing.
