Compress video for text message

Carriers limit videos sent as a text (MMS) to 1 MB to 3.5 MB. We compress yours to 0.9 MB so it sends.

Sending video by text message

When a text can’t go by iMessage or RCS, for example from an iPhone to an older Android phone, it’s sent as MMS, and the carrier sets the size limit: 1 MB on AT&T and T-Mobile, 3.5 MB for video on Verizon. Your phone then either squeezes the video until it’s blurry, or refuses to send it.

Pick the carrier above and add the video. We compress it to 0.9 MB or 3.3 MB, a little under the limit. That’s very little room: under twenty seconds fits in 0.9 MB, and about a minute in 3.3 MB, both at 360p. Cut the video down to the moment that matters first.

Blue bubbles on an iPhone mean iMessage, which takes far bigger videos; the limit only applies to green bubbles, and to Android phones texting without RCS. If the other person uses WhatsApp or Messenger, sending it there keeps much more of the picture.

What is the size limit for a video in a text?

For MMS, 1 MB on AT&T and T-Mobile and 3.5 MB for video on Verizon. The receiving carrier’s limit counts too. iMessage and RCS chats allow much bigger files.

Why does my phone say the video is too big?

Because the message is going as MMS, and the video is over the carrier’s limit. Compress it here to 0.9 MB, then attach the MP4 to the text instead of the original.

Which carrier should I pick?

1 MB when you’re not sure: it goes through on every carrier. Pick Verizon only when you and the other person are both on Verizon, since the smaller of the two limits wins.

Will a video this small look good?

Fine on a phone screen for a short clip, but not sharp. We lower the resolution to keep the picture clean instead of blocky. For longer videos, send a link or use a chat app instead.
