Getting a video under 1 MB
1 MB is the limit for a video in a text message on AT&T and T-Mobile, when the text goes as MMS instead of iMessage or RCS. Some forms and profile uploads stop at 1 MB too. It’s tiny: a phone records 1 MB of video in about half a second.
So only short clips fit, under twenty seconds even at the lowest resolution. Cut the video down to the moment that matters with our video cutter first. Texting it? Our text message page aims for 0.9 MB, a little under the carrier limit.
We aim a little under 1 MB so the file is sure to fit, since most sites reject anything even slightly over. Sizes are in decimal megabytes (1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes), so the result also fits a limit that counts megabytes the binary way. Your video is encoded once at the bitrate that lands on 1 MB; when it’s compressed in your browser, the result is measured and done again if it came out too big.
How long a video fits in 1 MB
The longest video that keeps each resolution, for a typical 30 fps video with sound. At 60 fps, expect about half as long.
| Resolution | Longest video |
|---|---|
| 1080p | |
| 720p | |
| 480p | |
| 360p |
Longer than 0:18? Even 360p would look too rough, so the page asks for a bigger size. Trim the video first or choose a bigger size.
Where you’ll run into 1 MB
Google Forms uploads
Whoever builds a form with a file question picks the largest file it takes, and 1 MB is the smallest choice. If the form turns your clip away, cut it to a few seconds and compress it here. The owner can raise the limit in the form’s settings, so asking is worth a try too.
Texts on AT&T and T-Mobile
Once a message drops from iMessage or RCS to MMS, these carriers carry about 1 MB of video. A 1 MB file squeezes in; our text message page aims for 0.9 MB for a little more margin. If it still bounces, the other person’s carrier may be the stricter one.
Profile videos and avatars
Many sites keep looping profile clips and animated avatars tiny. Pick the two or three seconds you want on repeat with our video cutter: a loop that short keeps a sharp picture, even at this size.

Questions
Can’t find your answer? Write to feedback@videocompressor.xyz.
Will the video be exactly 1 MB?
Just under it. We aim a few percent below 1 MB so it’s certain to fit, since sites and apps reject a file that is even slightly over.
What if my video is already under 1 MB?
Then it already fits, and the page tells you so. You can send it as it is, or still make it smaller with a preset.
Will my video look worse at 1 MB?
That depends on its length. A short video keeps its full resolution; a longer one is scaled down, to 720p or lower, so the picture stays clean instead of blocky. The table above shows where each step starts. The sound keeps its quality unless the size is very small for the length.
What if my video is too long for 1 MB?
Past 0:18 there aren’t enough bits for a watchable picture, even at 360p, and the page asks for a bigger size. Trim the video with our video cutter first, or choose a bigger size.
Can a video really be compressed to 1 MB?
A short one, yes: a few seconds keep a sharp picture and up to about twenty seconds fit at 360p. A longer video doesn’t have enough bits left for a watchable picture, so trim it first or choose a bigger size.
Why won’t my phone text a video?
When the text goes as MMS, the carrier limits it to about 1 MB, and a phone video is far bigger. A 1 MB file goes through on every carrier. If you both use iMessage, RCS or a chat app, the limit is much higher.
Why does my 1 MB video look blurry?
Because those few bits are spread over every second of it. Halve the length and each second gets twice as much, so the page can keep a higher resolution; our video cutter trims it before you compress.
Should I choose H.264 or H.265 for 1 MB?
H.265 keeps more detail in the same 1 MB, so a longer video can keep a higher resolution. Choose it when the people you send it to have newer devices; H.264 plays everywhere.
Is my video uploaded to compress it?
Not when your browser can handle it: then it’s compressed on your device. Otherwise it goes to our server over an encrypted connection and is deleted 2 hours after compressing.
